NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Welcomes Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel, M.D.

Join the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences in welcoming Eric Kandel, M.D., recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology to Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Thursday, Feb. 21, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Miniaci Performing Arts Center located on the NSU main campus at 3301 College Ave, Davie, Fl.


DCF Secretary Bob Butterworth to speak at Foster Child Conference at NSU

Florida Department of Children & Families Secretary Bob Butterworth will discuss strategies to improve the lives of foster children Thursday (Feb 14) at a youth empowerment conference at Nova Southeastern University (NSU).

Butterworth will be making his remarks at the conference, called Fostering Success: Strategies to Empower Youth to Succeed as Adults.


NSU Presents Brazilian Martial Arts and Dance

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is presenting Brazilian martial arts, fighting and dance on Thursday as part of its celebration of Black History Month.

The event, Body and Movement by the Corpo e Movimento Capoeira Academy, will take place at NSU’s University Center Flight Deck between noon and 12:30 p.m. Mestre Pele, a native of Brazil and director of the Capoiera Academy in Wilton Manors, will demonstrate Capoiera, which encompasses Brazilian martial arts, fighting and dance.


Nova Southeastern University to Host College Goal Sunday

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will host College Goal SundaySM, a program that helps college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), on Feb. 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be held at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center located on NSU’s main campus in Davie, Florida.


NSU Nursing Students to Provide Free Health Screenings at Sistrunk Historical Festival and Parade

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) nursing students will be providing free health screenings in celebration of Black History Month at the Sistrunk Historical Festival and Parade.

The students, who are a part of NSU’s College of Allied Health and Nursing, will provide the health screenings on Saturday, February 23 during the Sistrunk Historical Festival & Parade on Sistrunk Boulevard.


NSU Hosts “A Continent of Cultural Treasures” Art Exhibit In Celebration of Black History Month

Local collectors of African art and artifacts have joined with Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to celebrate the rich heritage of Africa with an engaging art exhibit themed “A Continent of Cultural Treasures.”

On display Feb. 8 through Mar. 23 are more than 100 items including African masks, baskets, musical instruments, prints, paintings, stools, dolls, jewelry, kente looms and cloths, which will be showcased in the second floor gallery of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center.


Nova Southeastern University Announces 8th Annual Humanitarian of the Year Award

The Center for Psychological Studies (CPS) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will honor Alan and Susie Levan at the 8th Annual Humanitarian of the Year Award on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Ft. Lauderdale Grande Hotel. A reception begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and award ceremony at 7:00 p.m.

Each year, CPS presents the Humanitarian of the Year Award to individuals who have significantly contributed to our community in the areas of education, health care, family life, the welfare of others and public safety.


NSU’s Unity Week to Celebrate Diversity and Encourage Peace

Nova Southeastern University will hold its annual Unity Week from Jan. 19-25 with activities and events designed to celebrate diversity, create peace and foster community support.

Below are some of the highlights of Unity Week 2008. Events are free and open to the public and will be held on NSU’s main campus (3301 College Ave.).


NSU Celebrates Black History Month with Broad Range of Enlightening and Entertaining Events

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will celebrate Black History Month 2008 with a variety of events including art, dance performances, special film viewings, lectures and discussions, and health screenings.

Highlights of the month-long celebration include a discussion on Feb. 8 by author and oral historian Kitty Oliver about South Florida’s black history; the opening of “A Continent of Cultural Treasures” African Presence 2008 Art Exhibition on Feb. 7 that runs through March 8, and a stepping class and performance on Feb. 24 by the critically- acclaimed professional company Step Afrika. In addition, NSU medical volunteers will be at the Sistrunk Historical Festival on Feb. 23 to offer health screenings.


Educational Research Symposium to be held at Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University’s Health Profession’s Division will be holding its 2nd annual Health Professional Educational Research Symposium this weekend.

The conference, which will run from Jan. 18 to 20, will engage health care faculty from around the country in a discussion about educational research and teaching in the health professions. It will be held at NSU’s Health Professions Divisions (HPD), which consists of six colleges —- osteopathic medicine, optometry, dental medicine, medical sciences, pharmacy and allied health and nursing.


Advertising Executive and Entrepreneur Jordan Zimmerman to Speak at Nova Southeastern University’s Business School

Jordan Zimmerman, founder and chairman of Zimmerman Advertising and part-owner of the NHL’s Florida Panthers, will speak at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship on Feb. 4 as part of the Business School’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

The free public lecture will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Julian and Ellen Knight Lecture Hall in the Carl DeSantis Building, located on NSU’s main campus (3301 College Avenue).


Governor Appoints NSU Dean of Diversity To State Minority Teachers Board

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is proud to announce the appointment of Delores M. Smiley, Ed.D, to the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers (FFMT) Board of Directors.

Smiley, who serves as Dean of Community Education and Diversity Affairs at NSU’s Fischler of Education and Human Services, has been appointed to the board for a three-year term by Florida Governor Charlie Crist.


NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library To Host Grant Writing Workshop Jan. 19

The Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) and the Broward County Cultural Division are hosting a workshop on Jan. 19 to assist artists of all disciplines with preparing effective proposals for project-based grant funding.


Saperstein Appointed Director of Career Development at NSU

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has appointed Shari Saperstein as director of career development.

In her role, Saperstein will work with academic departments, graduate and professional programs, and employers to form strategic partnerships that support career planning and preparation for NSU students and alumni.


NSU to Honor Dan and Claire Marino with President’s Community Award at Celebration of Excellence

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will award Dan and Claire Marino with the university’s highest honor, the President’s Community Award, at NSU’s annual Celebration of Excellence on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. The President’s Community Award is bestowed annually to individuals whose leadership and support provides the foundation for continued growth of the university.


Nova Southeastern University uses High-Tech Dental Imaging Machine

Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine (NSU-CDM) announced Thursday it’s using a three dimensional imaging machine to perform cutting-edge dental surgeries that will reduce patients’ exposure to radiation, while saving them time and money.
