NSU Students, Staff to Start New Year with “NSU’s Biggest Loser” Weight-Loss Challenge

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Selected students and staff at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will begin the new year with a challenge to lose weight and get in shape as NSU’s Biggest Loser returns.

Based on the popular NBC television show by the same name, NSU’s Biggest Loser will take 18 participants through a 16-week weight-loss program. Like the show, they will be divided into teams and participate in team and individual workouts with trainers. Participants will have regular meetings with a nutritionist and keep journals of their daily nutrition and exercise. They will also receive motivational coaching from NSU’s Healthy Lifestyle Guided Self-Change Program.

An opening workshop will be held on Jan. 9th and weigh-ins and workouts begin on Jan. 12th. The competition will run through April.

Last year’s NSU’s Biggest Loser program saw its 14 contestants lose a total of 381 pounds – an average of 27 pounds per participant. Elizabeth Brennan, Ed.D., associate headmaster at University School at NSU, was crowned NSU’s Biggest Loser for 2008 for losing 22.1 percent of her weight (42 pounds).

“The Biggest Loser program only lasted four months, but for me it was the first four months to the rest of my healthy lifestyle,” said NSU student Robin Furmanski, who lost 24 pounds as a participant in the program last year. “It helped me gain confidence in myself and learn that anything is possible with the proper mindset and support group. I am forever grateful to those who helped me along my journey.”
