Congressman Ron Klein to deliver keynote address at NSU’s Health Professions Division Commencement

U.S. Rep. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, will be speaking at Nova Southeastern University’s Health Professions Division’s commencement on Sunday, Aug. 24.

The 2 p.m. ceremony will take place at NSU’s University Center Arena. Among the 494 graduates participating in the event will be 29 graduates from Florida’s first anesthesiologist assistant program located at NSU. This is the fifth program of its type in the U.S.

DePiano Appointed University Provost and V.P. of Academic Affairs at Nova Southeastern University

Frank DePiano, Ph.D., has been appointed university provost and vice president for academic affairs at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). The announcement was made today by NSU President Ray Ferrero, Jr.

In the newly established position of university provost, DePiano will plan and coordinate initiatives related to the academic development of NSU. As such, the deans of NSU’s 16 colleges and schools report to him.

NSU’s Huizenga School to Hold Fourth Annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Night

The Nova Southeastern University H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship will hold its fourth annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Night on Sept. 12 to raise money for undergraduate scholarships.

Performers at the Huizenga School’s Rock ‘n’ Roll night will include: Nokie Edwards, lead guitarist for The Ventures and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; singer and songwriter Richie Supa, who has toured with Aerosmith; and American blues rock and rock ‘n’ roll guitarist George Terry, who has recorded with artists such as Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Dolly Parton, and The Bee Gees and composed several hit songs, including “Lay Down Sally” and “I Shot the Sheriff.”

UM – NSU Launch Mobile Autism Family Clinic in Broward County

The University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities’ new mobile autism clinic will be in Davie on Saturday, Aug. 23rd.

This first-of-its-kind Mobile Family Autism clinic is a 23-foot bus that’s equipped with high-tech tools that allow health care providers to evaluate children for signs of autism.

NSU’s Mailman Segal Institute Earns National NAEYC Accreditation

The Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is one of the first early childhood programs to earn accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals.

Located on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Davie, the Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies (MSI) is a multidisciplinary demonstration and training center for education and research in the fields of early childhood and autism.

NSU Health Care Centers Offer Low-Cost Back-to-School Physicals

Nova Southeastern University’s Health Care Centers will offer parents and schoolchildren an opportunity beginning on Saturday, Aug. 9, to get their required physicals at a low cost before school starts.

The centers will offer Back-to-School physicals at a flat fee of $25, which will include a medical checkup, eye exam, dental exam, and much more. This fee is a small fraction of what parents would normally have to pay for such quality preventative health care.

NSU’s Online Programs Certified by Southern Regional Education Board Reaches 70

Nova Southeastern University’s total number of online programs certified by the Southern Regional Education Board’s Electronic Campus recently reached 70, giving NSU the most certified programs among the 325 institutions in the SREB’s Electronic Campus.

The SREB’s Electronic Campus program certifies that the online programs and courses it approves are in full compliance with its comprehensive set of Principles of Good Practice.

NSU Ranks No. 1 in Awarding Doctoral Degrees to Hispanics

Nova Southeastern University ranks first in the nation in the number of doctoral degrees awarded to Hispanics and ranks second in master’s degrees, according to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics 2008 edition.

NSU also ranks first in the number of Hispanic women enrolled at the graduate level and is third in the overall number of Hispanics enrolled in graduate school.

NSU’s Newest Residence Halls to Open July 28

Nova Southeastern University’s newest residence hall – the Rolling Hills Graduate Apartments – will open to students for the first time on July 28.

The Rolling Hills Graduate Apartments will house 373 beds in two buildings – a seven-story building with 236 beds and a three-story building with 137 beds – and is located one mile west of the main NSU campus in Davie.

Federal Funding for Coral Reef Research Presented to Nova Southeastern University

On July 7, U.S. Congressman Ron Klein (D-FL) presented Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Oceanographic Center Dean Richard Dodge, Ph.D., and NSU Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer George Hanbury, Ph.D., with a check representing 2008 federal funding for the National Coral Reef Institute (NCRI), located at NSU’s Oceanographic Center.

Nova Southeastern University wins Telly Awards

Dateline Health, Nova Southeastern University’s public service show, won a Bronze Telly Award at the 29th Annual Telly Awards. Dateline Health won in the video/film category.

Telly Awards is a national and international competition and that receives over 14,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries, according to its website. The awards honor the top local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web, according to its website.

World-Class Opportunities to Learn about Coral Reefs in Broward County

The whole world is celebrating the International Year of the Reef 2008 (, and this summer there is no better place to learn about coral reefs than Broward County!

From July 7 to 11, the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS), the world’s largest conference devoted to coral reef science will be at the Broward County Convention Center. Held every four years, this scientific meeting is sanctioned by the International Society for Reef Studies (ISRS).
