NSU Sponsoring & Participating in Unprecedented Thousand Youth March to Abolish Bullying – Nov. 16
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Members of the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) community and their families will join Broward County school children to call for humane, bully-free schools at the Thousand Youth March for Humanity on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m.
The NSU-sponsored march will begin at Huizenga Plaza in downtown Fort Lauderdale and proceed for less than a mile through closed streets back to the plaza for a rally. The rally will include bands, balloons, brief comments by Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Jim Notter, and a call-and-response anti-bullying chant from the crowd.
This is an unprecedented event in South Florida and perhaps in the United States, bringing together a diverse cross-section of students from grades K-12 in a grassroots effort to abolish bullying.
Conceived and organized by The Humanity Project, a Broward-based nonprofit group, the march has been approved by Broward County Public Schools and will be held in support of the Broward School Board’s new comprehensive anti-bullying policy, which has become a template for other Florida school districts working to comply with the recently passed anti-bullying state law. This march is part of the BCPS Anti-Bullying Task Force effort to create a student-led movement within the schools, allowing young people to directly address the concerns of their peers. By taking to the streets to abolish school bullying, more than one thousand students will deliver a powerful message.
“I believe the Thousand Youth March for Humanity can be a truly galvanizing event for Broward County,” said Robert Spencer Knotts, president and founder of The Humanity Project. “It will be a memorable symbol that promotes greater unity and humanity among our students and everyone working in the schools, and a step toward making bullying socially unacceptable for young people.”
NSU participants will wear their NSU shirts to the march to show the university’s support for this cause. Additional march sponsors include the Florida Marlins, AutoNation, Children’s Services Council, Yellow Strawberry Global Hair Salon, Freeman Orthodontics, Framing By Morris, Downtown Development Authority, State Farm and Office Depot Foundation.
