Nova Southeastern University Students to Aid Hurricane Victims in Haiti
FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE Fla. – Nova Southeastern University students have started a relief effort to raise money and collect food for Haitians who have been devastated by recent hurricanes and tropical storms.
Students from the university’s Health Professions Division began the humanitarian work last week by collecting nonperishable food, clothes, water, bedding and other supplies. NSU’s College of Pharmacy students also began selling stickers for $5 apiece this week to raise money for the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Organized by students from the colleges of pharmacy, osteopathic medicine and allied health and nursing, this critical campaign is a collaborative effort with Food for the Poor, a Coconut Creek based charity. The students will be collecting donations from boxes placed throughout Nova Southeastern University’s main campus in Davie, as well as NSU’s locations in West Palm Beach and Ponce, Puerto Rico. Food for the Poor will collect the goods on Sept. 26 and transport them to Haiti. Another drive will start on Sept. 26.
The island nation was struck by hurricanes Ike and Gustav and tropical storms Fay and Hannah during a month-long stretch. The storms caused widespread damage, leaving towns inundated with floodwaters and residents without homes, food and potable water.
As a show of support, students from the College of Pharmacy who donated to the hurricane relief drive will wear jeans to their classes on Friday. Health Professions students are normally not allowed to wear jeans to class. They must either wear white coats or medical scrubs.
Our hearts go out to the victims,” said April Mitchison, B.Sc., M.B.A., Manager of Events and Academic Support Systems at NSU’s Health Professions Division. “We are hoping to collect as much food and supplies as we can to help them in their time of need. As Floridians, we understand how devastating hurricanes can be.”
