Five Staff Members at NSU Fischler School Make the Cut to Donate to Locks of Love

Five staff members of NSU's Fischler School of Education and Human Services recently cut their hair in order to donate it to Locks of Love. Participants include Laura Garrido, left, Veronica Camaraza, Heather Holliday, Tiara Brewster and Jacelyn Mock.

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Five members of the Fischler School of Education and Human Services marketing department drastically cut their long hair short in a recent group effort to make a donation to the Locks of Love organization.

They chose to donate their hair to Locks of Love because it is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss.

The participating ladies made the commitment in December 2007 after being inspired by a story Oprah Winfrey aired about other groups of women who came together to make a Locks of Love donation.

“Something as effortless as growing out our hair is the least we can do for children in distress,” said Laura Garrido, the Fischler School’s marketing team leader and coordinator of the group’s Locks of Love effort. “It’s an opportunity to help raise their self-esteem, and if we can help their school life be a little better, why wouldn’t we?”

To document the event, the participating members took photos displaying the length of their hair at different intervals. They also made a commitment to continue to grow their hair until there was at least 10 inches available, which is the minimum length requirement for a Locks of Love donation.

Five of the ladies in the department have already cut their hair, including Laura Garrido, Veronica Camaraza, Heather Holliday, Tiara Brewster and Jacelyn Mock – with two others waiting for their hair to grow a couple of more inches. So far the team has donated 50 inches of hair to Locks of Love.
