SHSS Faculty Participates in Peace Conference in South Africa and Works with Political Violence Survivors in Zimbabwe

Pumula Gobodo-Madikizela from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Ismael Muvingi, Ph.D

Ismael Muvingi, Ph.D., faculty member at the Graduate School of Humanities & Social Sciences’ Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR), was a participant and provided workshops with survivors of political violence from the 2008 Zimbabwean elections. The survivors have formed a healing and reconstitution of society initiative called Tree of Life.

In 2010, Muvingi secured a small grant for the project to undertake healing initiatives with youth from one of Harare’s sprawling urban settlements. Tree of Life is now a nationwide initiative that works in collaboration with a skills training initiative called Kufunda (Shona for learning) through which survivors of violence learn new skills to earn a living such as solar energy implement assembly and sales.

In addition, Muvingi was a participant in a peace conference held in Cape Town, South Africa, June 5-7, 2013. The conference focused on what happens on the ground level after Trials and Truth Commissions following periods of societal violence. Participants included practitioners from across the African continent and members of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
