Optometry Faculty Member Participates in Global Vision Research Study
For the past four years, a global collaboration of 79 ophthalmologists and optometrists, have reviewed all published data on vision loss from 1980 to 2012. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, highlights the decreases that have occurred in adult blindness and other vision issues between 1990 and 2010. It is anticipated that this research will greatly assist health providers in the distribution of optometric care, and serve as an important tool towards the goal of eliminating avoidable blindness.
NSU College of Optometry’s Associate Professor, Janet Leasher, O.D., was the coordinator for regional data collection and is currently authoring the region specific papers. Leasher has a degree in International Health and Development and serves as the North American Regional Coordinator for the UNESCO Chair in Visual Health and Development.
