NSU Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month with Free Events, Sept. 15-Oct. 15
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will recognize and honor Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Latin culture through a variety of activities.
All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. All events will be held at locations throughout NSU’s main campus in Davie at 3301 College Ave, and its Abraham S. Fischler School of Education campus at 1750 NE 167th Street in North Miami Beach.

Cine Argentino: The Mural (US Premiere), 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
The Alvin Sherman Library sponsors this Argentine Film Festival and kicks off with the U.S. Premiere of “The Mural.” Argentine actress and journalist Adriana Bianco will introduce and provide commentary. Circle of Friends Presents: Core Ensemble’s Tres Vidas, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
A chamber music theatre work with actress and trio (cello, piano and percussion) based on the lives of three legendary Latin American women: Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant activist Rufina Amaya and Argentinean poet Alfonsina Storni. Fischler School Hispanic Heritage Opening Celebration, 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.
The Abraham S. Fischler School of Education will kick off its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with a traditional opening flag ceremony, short vignettes of families adapting to a new language and culture and more. Hispanics in the U.S: Who, What, When, Where, and Why? Noon – 1:00 p.m.
The number of individuals of Latino background in the United States has increased significantly in the past several decades. There are a number of historical, political, and socio-economic forces that are related to this phenomenon. This presentation, facilitated by Amarilis Acevedo, Ph.D., from NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies, will explore these factors and the implications of these demographic changes in the provision of psychological services to this important segment of our population. The Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA) will be hosting their Annual Hispanic Heritage Dance Salsa Night event. HLSA, joined by the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA) invite students, faculty, advisors, and staff to celebrate Hispanic culture and experience Spanish dance and food. The NSU College of Pharmacy will host this cocktail hour and theater production to celebrate the artistic and political passions of Diego Rivera, the unwavering commitment to human rights of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero and the pursuit of social justice by Mexican American desperado Joaquin Murrieta a.k.a. Hispanic Heritage Month events held at regional NSU Student Educational Centers
NSU – Tampa | September 15 – October 15
- NSU-Tampa will host a weekly Hispanic Trivia contest on random days from September 15 to October 15 to boost awareness among staff, students and faculty. Prizes of NSU gear will be awarded to the winners.
- NSU-Tampa will mount Hispanic FACT boards throughout the building feature Hispanic leaders and notable moments in Hispanic history
NSU – Miami | Monday, October 1
- NSU-Miami will host a Hispanic Themed luncheon and a Trivia contest on Monday, October 1. Winners of the contest will receive NSU prizes.
