NSU Hosts Diabetes Alert Day
On March 27, Nova Southeastern University’s College of Health Care Sciences, in partnership with NSU’s College of Pharmacy and College of Optometry, the American Diabetes Association, and the NSU Health Care Clinics, hosted Diabetes Alert Day at NSU. Students, faculty, staff, and local community members received educational materials about diabetes as well as free health screenings. The NSU College of Pharmacy clinicians and students provided free blood glucose tests, while the College of Health Care Sciences faculty and students offered free Ankle-Brachial Index screenings.

Janet Leasher O.D. and Nicole Patterson O.D., represented NSU’s Eye Care Institute at this event, educating the community about diabetic eye disease and reminding them to have annual comprehensive eye exams which NSU’s Eye Care Institute offers at 5 locations across Broward County. The College of Optometry provided educational materials regarding eye health and diabetes and community partners from Walgreens and Humana also provided information and screenings at the event. Diabetes Alert Day organizer Terry Morrow, Ph.D., assistant dean of Student Affairs in the College of Health Care Sciences said, “Diabetes Alert Day at NSU was the most comprehensive of the ten events held throughout Broward County on this day and showcased the valuable arrays of services and expertise that NSU offers our local community. NSU has the potential to be a leader in diabetes education and care in Broward County, and the event was a great opportunity to demonstrate the possibilities for collaboration. The event was also a great opportunity for NSU health care faculty and students to connect and share their expertise while serving our campus and local community.”
This was a one-day, national “wake-up call” which asked participants to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Early diagnosis is critical to successful treatment and delaying or preventing some of its complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, stroke, amputation and death.
Attendees received educational information about diabetes as well as free (fasting) blood glucose screenings, foot care and education, and vascular screenings. NSU is one of 10 locations in Broward County partnered with the American Diabetes Association on this important event.
