Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Professor Gives Plenary Talk at Top Math Conference

Fuzhen Zhang, Ph.D., professor at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, gave an invited plenary talk at the 18th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society. This past spring, Zhang was named the college’s Distinguished Professor of the Year.

Fuzhen Zhang, Ph.D., professor at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, gave an invited plenary talk on “Generalized Matrix Functions” at the 18th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) in Providence, Rhode Island, Jun. 3–7. The ILAS conference is the highest-level meeting of mathematicians from the field, and it is considered a lifetime honor to present there.

In addition to the plenary, Zhang also led a conference session on matrices titled “Some Inequalities Involving Majorization.” The presentation was based on Zhang’s collaborative work with Diego Castano, Ph.D., and Vehbi Paksoy, Ph.D., associate professors at the college, as well as with Geir Dahl, Ph.D., professor of mathematics at the University of Oslo in Norway.

Professor of the Year

This past spring, Zhang was named the 2013 Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of the Year. The award is presented to a faculty member at the rank of full professor with at least 10 years of full-time teaching experience at NSU, a sustained record of scholarship, and a portfolio demonstrating excellence in teaching.

Zhang is the author of multiple books on topics such as matrices and linear algebra. Over the years, his journal articles have been cited by thousands of researchers from a variety of fields. At NSU, Zhang teaches undergraduate courses on linear algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and applied statistics.
