Women’s Basketball Tips Off 2015-16 Season in November

Nov. 13

The Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team and head coach LeAnn Freeland begin the quest for their fourth straight South Region title with the annual NSU Tipoff Classic in Mid-November, tipping off the 2015-16 regular season schedule.

The Sharks return nine players from their third straight Elite Eight appearance a season ago, and add six newcomers to form a stacked 15-player roster for Freeland’s fifth season at the helm. Their first matchup of the year at the NSU Arena, at noon on Friday, Nov. 13, will be against North Alabama, and the Sharks will host Lee the following day at 7 p.m. to wrap up the opening weekend round-robin.

From there, it’s three early season Sunshine State Conference games, against Lynn at home (Nov. 18) and then away at both Saint Leo (Nov. 21) and Florida Tech (Nov. 24). Four of the next five games are out-of-conference (the exception being Rollins at home on Dec. 5) before another home showcase, the Shark Holiday Classic, Dec. 19-20. Miles and Albany State will be the opposition for that two-day event.

Following the holiday break will be NSU’s first-ever matchup with SSC provisional member Embry-Riddle, at home on Saturday, Jan. 2. Twelve of the final 14 games will be against conference foes, with the final regular season home matchup against Eckerd on Saturday, Feb. 20, and the final game before postseason play a week following that, in Lakeland against Florida Southern.

Postseason schedules are as follows: the first round of the SSC Championship will be held at a higher seed’s home arena at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, with the semifinals and title game on March 5-6 in Daytona Beach (hosted by Embry-Riddle at the ICI Center); the South Region runs from March 11-14 at a site to be determined; and the 2016 NCAA Elite Eight, beginning for the second straight year at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds (dates as of now scheduled for March 22 and 23), and the National Championship game at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Monday, April 4.
