Women’s Basketball Announces Third Recruit for Incoming 2016-17 Class
Head coach LeAnn Freeland and the Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball program are proud to announce a third early signee for the 2016-17 season in Cheray Saunders from Hartford, Connecticut.
Saunders’ announcement follows those of Kariss Keller and Erin Powers, joining them as members of the next freshman class for the Sharks. Last year for Farmington High School, Saunders averaged 11.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, had an astounding assist/turnover ratio of 4.4 (150 to 34, a per-game average of 6.5 assists), and also came up with 97 steals, 3.7 a contest.
The 5-10 point guard shot 50 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3-point range, leading the Indians to a 26-1 overall record, an 18-0 regular season mark in the Central Connecticut Conference, and the 2015 CCC Tournament championship. Farmington made it to the semifinals of the Connecticut Girls State Basketball Class L Tournament (the third straight season the team has advanced at least that far), and Saunders was, for the second consecutive time, a unanimous selection to the All-CCC First Team.
“Cheray is a very dynamic and versatile player,” said Freeland. “She is long, athletic, skilled and a hard worker. On the offensive end, she pushes the ball well in transition, can create for herself and teammates, and knocks down the open three. On the defensive end, she is a gamechanger. Over the summer with her Connecticut Starters AAU team, I saw her take over the game on the defensive end. When I saw her determination to impact the game, I knew she would be a good fit for us. We look for winners and she certainly is a winner. We are excited to announce Cheray Saunders is a Shark.”
