Wisconsin Duo to Join Women’s Basketball for 2016-17 Season
The Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team and head coach LeAnn Freeland are proud to welcome the two newest members to the program for the 2016-17 season, in the Wisconsin duo of Kariss Keller and Erin Powers.
Keller and Powers are from Waukesha and Appleton, Wisconsin, respectively, and are teammates with the powerhouse Wisconsin Lakers summer squad. Keller is a 5-8 guard who plays high school ball at Waukesha West; Powers is a 5-10 guard from Xavier High School.
“In this class, we were looking to add a gritty, yet skilled, athlete who viewed themselves as a defensive stopper,” said Freeland of Keller. “She fits this description well. She has played for the Wisconsin Laker AAU program for seven years and their program mirrors ours in a lot of ways. What I noticed about Kariss while watching her this summer was her ability to change the game with the intensity she brings on the defensive end. Our program believes ‘good defense leads to good offense,’ so adding Kariss to our roster will impact both ends of the court. She will be a great addition to our program on the court and in the classroom. We are excited to announce Kariss Keller is a Shark.”
Keller has started all four seasons, and is a two-year captain, for the Wolverines. She is currently second all-time in school history in both assists and steals, and has been a second team All-Conference selection.
Powers is coming off of a season in which she averaged 13.7 points per game and led her Hawks’ squad to the WIAA Division 3 State Championship game. She has been named both Honorable Mention All-State and first team All-Conference.
“Erin is a skilled, hard-nosed competitor who helped lead her team to the state championship game her junior year,” said Freeland. “When I saw her play over the summer with the Wisconsin Lakers AAU program, I appreciated her work ethic, ability to shoot the three, and determined mindset. I was even more excited about her when I found out her high school team was an elite program as well. Erin is a perfect fit for our program on and off the court. We are excited to announce Erin Powers is a Shark.”
The pair will join another native Wisconsinite, guard/forward Mary Hirt (So., Hartland, Wisc.), who would be a junior come the fall of 2016.
