Westcott Signs with Independent team, Lincoln Saltdogs

rp_primary_Dolphins_Design_950x480Nova Southeastern University’s baseball team adds it’s fourth professional signing after the record breaking 2015 season. Zachary Westcott has signed a contract to play for the Lincoln Saltdogs, an independent baseball team based in Lincoln, Neb.

After learning of the Saltdogs’ interest in signing him over the weekend, Westcott had this to say:

“Honestly it all happened so fast. One day I’m in Kissimmee coaching 14 year old, and the next I’m waking up at the crack of dawn to fly halfway across the country. Playing professional baseball has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, but it was NSU that really turned that dream into a goal. Nova’s coaching staff, led by Coach Brown, has been a huge part of my growth as a player and successes on the field. I could not thank Brownie and the other coaches enough for what they’ve done for me not just as a player, but develop me into the man I am today through the life lessons that they have taught over the past five years of my life. I’ve learned how to pitch from so many great coaches throughout my years at NSU, starting with Ray Romero, to Felipe Suarez, on to Pete Woodworth and the last ride with Justin Ramsey. I really can’t thank those guys enough.”

Westcott was dominant during his senior campaign. The quick-working right-handed hurler led the Sunshine State Conference in ERA against conference opponents with an astounding 0.70, while keeping conference hitters hitting well under the Mendoza Line of .200 at .156. Westcott was the first arm out of the bullpen this year in most situations, due to his uncanny ability to compete and strike hitters out. With 59 strikeouts on the year, Westcott struck out over a batter an inning while allowing nine walks all year.

“I’m extremely thankful for this opportunity to play for the Saltdogs,” said Westcott. ” I can’t wait to get out there and compete, like the NSU program has prepared me to do.”

Westcott is scheduled to make his first start on Monday, June 22, as the Saltdogs take on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. First pitch is set for 6:35 CT/7:35 ET. To watch the game, tune in right here.
