This Week in Shark Athletics

The new year is here and the Sharks are back in action! Never miss a beat of the action with these upcoming athletic events:

Basketball:
On Jan. 19, the men’s and women’s basketball team collides on the hardwood for its fifth league game of this year’s campaign in Boca Raton, Fla.

The men clashed with Lynn twice last season in home match-ups, but were unable to seal a victory. Lynn holds the all-time series edge at 15-9. At the game in Boca Raton last season, the Sharks fell 75-67.

Three days later on Jan. 22, NSU returns home to face Tampa at 4 p.m.  The Sharks trail in the all-time series with the Spartans, 8-13, but were able to split games with them last year with each team winning on its respective home floor. In the home-game last year, the Sharks won a thriller in the NSU Arena beating the Tampa, 76-74.

The women’s basketball team plays the front end of two doubleheaders on Jan. 19 and Jan. 22. They first face Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. for their fifth Sunshine State Conference match-up of the season at 5:30 p.m. before colliding with Tampa at the NSU Arena three days later on Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. NSU trails Lynn in the all-time series, 9-12, but were able to split games with them last season. The Sharks traveled to Boca Raton last year and pulled out a one-point victory, 67-66, in the first match-up between the two teams last season. The Sharks fell to the Spartans in both tussles last season, while Tampa also edges the Sharks 18-3 in the all-time series.

Swimming and Diving:
The Swimming and Diving team welcomes Saint Leo to the NSU Aquatic Center on Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. The team enters the water for the first time in 2011 after hosting its Inaugural Shark Invitational three weeks ago where both squads finished third against tough competition, including SSC foes Tampa, Rollins, and Florida Southern.

Track:
The men’s and women’s track teams open up their season on Jan. 22 as they head to Daytona Beach at Embry Riddle for their first meet of the year. Last year, both teams competed in this meet on Jan. 23, and even though no team score was tallied, NSU posted 13 top-5 finishes. Edikan Nkan broke the NSU shot put record tossing 42’9.5” in his 2010 debut. Alexis Sands also entered the NSU record book launching 117’6” in the discus throw, breaking a school record.
