Visit the Mobile Autism Clinic During Autism Awareness Day in Cooper City
Cooper City will be hosting its second annual Autism Awareness day at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue Station-28 on Apr. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This event will be an open house for Cooper City residents that have a family member with autism, and will feature the University of Miami – Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) mobile autism clinic. This first-of-its-kind mobile autism clinic is a 23-foot bus that’s equipped with high-tech tools that allow health care providers to evaluate children for signs of autism.
The open house will also give families a chance to meet the men and women in Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue that can respond in an emergency situation. Deputies and Firefighters/Paramedics from Cooper City have attended training to understand the Autism Spectrum and learn how to manage an incident involving a person with autism.
Training was conducted last year by the UM-NSU CARD, which is located at the Clinic for Speech, Language and Communication of NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services.
The Second Annual Cooper City Autism Awareness Day is a joint effort between the City of Cooper City, the Broward Sheriff’s Office, UM-NSU CARD and the Broward Professional Firefighters local 4321. The Cooper City District was the first fire district in Broward to host an event of this kind, and the day’s festivities will take place at BSO Fire Rescue Station-28, 10550 Stirling Road in Cooper City.
