Wednesday, October 5

Sharkey’s  Storytime Fun 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

¡Canta, baila, y ríe en la biblioteca! Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with stories and songs in English and Spanish. Encourage a lifelong love of books and reading at storytime! Entrepreneurial Ventures in Latin America: 21st Century Challenges, 1:15 -2:15 pm

Join the Huizenga Business School’s Graduate Business Student Association (GBSA) for a special Hispanic Heritage lunch, games, and gifts. Featured speaker is Miguel Orta, a native of Cuba, who has helped develop business ventures in more than 30 countries, including Venezuela, Columbia, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, & Panama. Presentation & Discussion: “Adjusting to a New Culture; Barriers, Challenges and Triumphs: Focus on Hispanics,” 2:15 – 3:30 pm

Hosted by the Lifelong Learning Institute, this presentation will feature a discussion on the process of adaptation to new cultures by older adults with a focus on a Hispanic population.  Presentation is facilitated by  Alina M. Perez, J.D., associate professor of Public Health at NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Starting with the definition of the word “culture”, she will discuss the many barriers and challenges older adults encounter in the process of adjusting  to the values and practices of a new culture. “¡Viva  la cultura hispana!” A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage through Literature and the Arts, 6:00 p.m.

Sponsored by Farquhar College of Arts & Sciences, this event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. We will celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage through visual arts and literature. The event will feature photographer/professor, Silvia Lizama, Ph.D., Olga Connor, Ph.D., a published author and journalist for El Nuevo Miami Herald as well as community activist, award- winning journalist for El Nuevo Miami Herald Daniel Shoer Roth. Members of the NSU Spanish Club will also share their experiences of the importance of learning the Spanish language and cultures.  Light refreshments and drinks will be served. Little Minnows Storytime: 10:30 – 11 am.

Cuentos y Canciones en Inglés y Español – Fiesta! Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with stories and songs in English and Spanish selected just for children ages 6-36 months old with caregiver. Inspire your future reader at storytime and experience the sounds and structure of language through rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Free. Location: Alvin Sherman Library. Great Latino Writers in the Ballroom, 11 am – Noon

This event will feature readings and reviews of great Latino writers presented in English by faculty members at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, 1750 NE 167 Street, North Miami Beach. “Hispanics: One People, Many Cultures” Panel Discussion, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Debra Nixon, Ph.D., faculty member at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, facilitates a panel discussion about the erroneous belief that all Hispanics are the same. Hispanic Heritage Month Latin Music and Dance Concert for Children with Paco Moreno and Friends, 2:00 pm
