University School’s Sun Beat Named Top High School Newspaper in Broward
University School of NSU’s Upper School Newspaper, The Sun Beat, was recently voted top high school newspaper in Broward County by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as part of the 2010 High School Journalism Awards Program.
Judges commented, “A creative design style coupled with imaginative and varied story selection earned The Sun Beat the top honor as Best Overall. Students were obviously the focus of the newspaper, as subjects and as audience. But the newspaper staff also took national topics and approached them from the student perspective.”
This prestigious competition is open to all public, charter, and private schools in Broward County. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Skylar Gould and Managing Editor Harris Mayersohn, The Sun Beat staff received a slew of awards including:
- Best Overall: First Place
- Staffers of the Year: Dinesh McCoy
- Cartoons/Graphics/Illustrations: First Place
- Photography: First Place for Michael Ginsberg
- Headlines: Honorable Mention
- Columnist: Second Place for Skylar Gould
- Editorial Writer: First Place for Harris Mayersohn and Third Place for Dinesh McCoy
- Entertainment Section: Honorable Mention
- Entertainment Writer: Third Place for Harris Mayersohn and Honorable Mention for Maya Navon
- Feature Writer: Third Place for Harris Mayersohn
- Sports Writer: Second Place for Dinesh McCoy
- News Writer: Third Place for Jessica Cabrera and Honorable Mention for Zachary Brown
- Front Page: Third Place
- Most Improved: Second Place
