University School Students Share their Stories at The First Grade Fairybook Festival
First grade students at NSU University School were thrilled to spend time with parents, grandparents, and friends at the annual Fairytale Festival.
Leading up to the festival, students completed a unit study of Fairytales, discussing the elements of a fairytale story including character, plot, setting, the problem, and the solution. Students also explored the “magical ” components of fairytales including animals who may wear clothes, speak, and/or walk on two legs.
After listening to and learning about various fairytales, students created and completed graphic organizers to outline their own fairytales. Like any good author, there was plenty of editing and revising while working through the writing process.
For the culminating fairytale festival event, students dressed up as their favorite storybook characters, read their original literary work, and sang songs from well-known storybooks to the audience.
