University School Students Participate in Mock Trial

For the 21st year, University School Middle School students connected with NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center students to hold a mock trial at the Broward County Courthouse.

Adjunct professors Michael Rocque and Robert Diaz of NSU’s law school offer a course called Street Law. As a part of the course, each year teachers in Broward County are invited to attend the first class, where students and schools are matched. Law students then spend time teaching the younger students about the law and training them in trial work. The 10-week preparation results in a mock trial competition at the Broward County Courthouse.

University School students recently participated in the Spring 2009 Mock Trials with four teams consisting of two defense counsels and prosecution. Attorneys, law students and real judges act as the judges, and parents and guests are often chosen as the jury.

Teams from two different schools are placed in the same courtroom. The case, written by the law professors, is the same for all schools. Students learn about opening and closing arguments, direct and cross examination of witnesses and how to object.
