University School Speech and Debate Team off to Great Start
In late September, the University School Speech and Debate team competed in the Mid-America Cup against 54 schools including teams from Washington, California, Texas, New York, Minnesota and was awarded the Lincoln Douglas Debate Overall Championship. Moreover, students David Branse and Saahil Jain earned bids to the Tournament of Champions.
Earlier this month, the team competed in the Crestian Tradition Tournament, which featured speech and debate teams from 12 different states. University School students represented the team very well. David Branse completed his Lincoln Douglas Debate qualification to the Tournament of Champions by earning a bid. In the Public Forum Debate, Ben Churba and Brian Herskowitz advanced to the final round of the tournament and earned their first bids to the Tournament of Champions. Logan Peretz and Cooper Linn advanced to the semifinal round and also earned their first bids to the Tournament of Champions. Moreover, Billy Herskowitz and Cory Riegelhaupt won best Novice Team in Public Forum. In the Individual Events, Daniel Greene was Impromptu champion and runner-up in Extemporaneous Speaking. Matthew Herskowitz was a semifinalist in Extemporaneous Speaking and won the Top Novice award. Additionally, Amanda Pravder was the Top Novice in Original Oratory.
More recently, University School participated in a Catholic Forensic League (CFL) local competition held at Miami Beach High School where Daniel Greene was the Extemporaneous Speaking champion and Faizaan Sadruddin the Dramatic Performance champion. Michael Waldman and Cory Riegelhaupt were both champions in Novice Public Forum Debate.
