University School of NSU Teacher Receives Lifelong Ambassador Award from Make-A-Wish Foundation
Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida recently honored University School of NSU’s (USchool) 4th grade teacher Sheila Szikman with the 2012 Sharon Novak Lifelong Ambassador Award.
Szikman and a parent established Make-A-Wish as USchool’s 4th grade charity 20 years ago. The idea of students being able to help other children made the initiative a particularly good fit. Szikman said the fundraising process also provides additional social studies, math and leadership learning opportunities for students.
In the organization’s letter to Szikman, Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida President & CEO Norman Wedderburn writes, “Sometimes ‘thank you’ is just not enough. Your support is truly remarkable and it is time that we recognize your dedication.”
Last year’s campaign efforts by University School students, staff and parents resulted in the granting of a record four wishes.
“Every year just gets bigger and better,” Szikman said.
