University School of NSU Students Honored During Florida Scholastic Chess Tournament
On Feb. 4, 5, and 6, fifteen members of University School of NSU’s chess team traveled to Orlando to compete in the annual Florida Scholastic Chess Championship.
After six grueling rounds of mind‐versus‐mind struggles against more than 540 competitors, the school’s K‐12 chess team was awarded the 1st place trophy and the title of Florida High School Team Chess Champions.
In addition to their team accomplishment, many players won individual awards. Winning his rating‐level section for K‐5 to take the first-place championship trophy was fourth grade student Stewart Hughes.
Sixth grade student, Cory Riegelhaupt, earned the second-place trophy in the K‐8 Open, finishing only half a point out of first. Cory also tied for first place in the High School Division of the speed‐chess championship and took second in Bughouse, a variant form of chess.
