Undergraduates Inducted into Alpha Chi National Honor Society
More than 50 undergraduate students from NSU have been inducted into the Eta chapter of the Alpha Chi national academic honor society for 2010–2011. The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences hosted an induction ceremony and reception at NSU on Nov. 19, to celebrate the students’ achievement.
The top 10 percent of juniors and seniors in each undergraduate major is invited to join Alpha Chi. As its mission statement declares, Alpha Chi’s purpose since 1922 has been “to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction.”
During the ceremony, Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, welcomed attendees and introduced the honor society’s faculty advisers: Robin Sherman, Ph.D., associate professor/associate director of the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology; and Stephen Levitt, LL.M., associate professor in the college. Rosenblum, Sherman, and Levitt joined faculty members and friends and family of new inductees in recognizing the outstanding achievements of the students joining Alpha Chi.
Also on hand to induct new members were NSU’s Alpha Chi student officers: Josie Augustin, Diana Castejon-Morales, Alessandra DaCunha, Max Hyman, and Case Warshall. The ceremony included a keynote talk by Olympia Duhart, J.D., associate professor in NSU’s Shepard Broad Law Center.
“I was thrilled to be able to speak to NSU’s best and brightest—especially on such a special occasion,” Duhart said after the event. “The students in Alpha Chi display the type of work ethic, drive, and intellect that will guarantee achievements both inside and outside of the classroom. I know this is just the first step in a long road of success and service to others.”
