The Undergraduate Student Symposium Awards Luncheon recognized students for their outstanding academic research and scholarship.

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences hosted the eighth annual Undergraduate Student Symposium Awards Luncheon at Nova Southeastern University on April 28, 2009. The formal presentation of awards recognized students for their outstanding academic research and scholarship.

Accompanied by their faculty advisers from the college, each award recipient from the 2008–2009 Undergraduate Student Symposium received a framed certificate, as well as a gift card to Barnes & Noble. Alexandra Paroulek, who won first place for her oral presentation of her research on “The Effects of the Herbal Enzyme Bromelain Against Breast Cancer Cell Line GI101A,” also received an award from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Additionally, Michael McGregor, who won first place in the third annual NSU Undergraduate Film Festival for his short film Lament, was presented with a film “contract” from NSU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Utilizing a $500 budget, McGregor will develop a short film to promote NSU. Once completed, the film will run on Web sites such as YouTube and Facebook.

Students who received awards for their submissions to Digressions, the student-run literary magazine sponsored by the college’s Division of Humanities, also were recognized at the luncheon for their achievements. Awards were distributed for works of poetry and fiction.

On hand to congratulate the students on their outstanding scholarship were Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences; Allan Schulman, Ph.D., professor in the college’s Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, who organized and directed the Undergraduate Student Symposium; directors of the college’s four divisions; and faculty advisers, who served as mentors to the students conducting their research for the symposium. Various faculty and staff members from the college and NSU’s Office of Admissions also attended the ceremony.

Each year, the Undergraduate Student Symposium showcases the outstanding scholarship of undergraduate students at NSU and features student projects and performances through oral presentations, paper submissions, and poster displays. Projects explore areas of student scholarship ranging from the experimental, applied, and computational to the theoretical, artistic, and literary.
