Two NSU Student Athletes Garner Weekly Conference Honors

Men’s swimmer, Anton Lobanov, earns SSC’s first award of the year and women’s soccer player, Sierra Lelii, gets her fourth

Two Nova Southeastern University student-athletes were chosen as their respective sport’s Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

Men’s swimmer Anton Lobanov (So., Novosibirisk, Russia) earned the first SSC Male Swimmer of the Week honors of the 2015-16 season for his performance at the NSU’s season-opening meet Sept. 18-20, while women’s soccer forward Sierra Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.) gathered her fourth Women’s Offensive Player of the Week of the year, scoring multiple points in each of the Sharks’ wins this past week.

Lobanov first won the 100-yard breaststroke (55.30) at the Pinch A Penny All Florida Invite, defeating all of his Division I competitors from the University of Florida, Towson University and Florida State University. He was one of two swimmers to swim a B-qualifying time in the event. Lobanov then went on to also win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:01.05), beating the all-DI field, including the runner-up from Florida by 2.60 seconds. Lobanov has swam the fastest 200-breast time in all of DII thus far in 2015-16, also by over two seconds.

Lelii was again instrumental in two more Shark wins last week, extending their streak to a program record-tying eight in a row. On Wednesday, in a 3-2 road victory over FIT, she had two goals, including her fifth game-winner of the season. Then on Saturday, she broke a scoreless draw early in the second half with her 17th score, and then assisted on the golden goal in the first overtime in a 2-1 win over No. 16 Rollins. During this last week, Lelii broke the NSU single-season marks for goals and points and continues to lead the SSC is most offensive categories.

Women’s soccer returns to action this Wednesday on the road against a ranked Barry squad, while the next Shark swim meet, on the men’s side, will be Nov. 6 when they host Indian River State.
