Trio of Topics Set for Next Mathematics Colloquium Series Talk, Nov. 14
As part of its Mathematics Colloquium Series, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host a guest lecture introducing three mathematical topics, with a discussion on their interrelation.

About the Talk
Geometry and topology enter into physics at many levels. This discussion will begin with Maxwell’s equations, as taught in introductory physics, and how they are related to the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem and the Gauss linking number. Next, Alvarez will introduce quantum mechanics and explain how Maxwell’s equations are related to topological Chern classes via Dirac’s charge quantization condition for magnetic monopoles. The talk will conclude with a discussion of fermions, as well as the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem and its uses in quantum field as well as string theories.

Hosted by the College’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology, the Mathematics Colloquium Series aims to increase awareness of mathematics’ importance to and applications in daily life. The Series also gives mathematics faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss independent research and share their passion for the subject. These talks are free and open to the public.
