Student-Athletes volunteer during cold Sunday morning.

The Nova Southeastern University track and field teams partnered up with Life Time Athletic Events on Sunday morning, Jan. 24 to provide aid at the Miami Marathon and Half Marathon.

The Sharks were stationed at the 1-mile mark of the marathon providing refreshments to the thousands of participants at the event. The student-athletes were also responsible for cheering on the participants, setting up and breaking down their aid station as well as cleaning the debris left on the entirety of the MacArthur Causeway.

Other than receiving community service hours, the Sharks were able to receive a donation to their program for their hard work and commitment to the community. The Miami Marathon and Half Marathon hosted over 25,000 participants, ranging from experienced runners to the beginner level. Some ran, others walked, and even the physically disabled were included in this special event organized by Life Time Fitness Athletic Events.

Track and field graduate assistant Charles Johnson shared his thoughts about this community service experience by saying, “It was a great bonding experience for our teams. To see so many people come together and complete the half and full marathon was a memorable experience. It showed our team that health and fitness exists beyond athletics.”
