Tips for a Greener Summer
Source: www.Treehugger.com
Oh the joys of summer. Longer sunny days, endless bar-b-que invitations, and all the outdoor activities one can handle. But how can you make this summer greener than last year without jeopardizing your fun in the sun? Here are a few tips from treehugger.com that promise to make your summer greener.
1. Decreasing your Carbon Footprint: By engaging in more local activities that have a low environmental impact such as visiting your city parks, local zoos, or something that most Floridians are no stranger to, a beach day with your family or friends, it beats hitting the skies for a summer vacation or the roadways for a cross country road trip which increase harmful emission into the environment. You could even pick up a new outdoor sport as a way to stay green on and off the field.
2. How you grillin’: Propane grills burn cleaner than their wood or charcoal powered counterparts. But for those grilling enthusiast who can’t resist the smoky taste from a charcoal or wood grill, you should try natural products, such as Cowboy Charcoal, which emits less toxins into the air. It produces the same great taste all while making Mother Nature smile. And don’t forget about the cleanup, aerosol cleaning products can produce a harmful mixture into the environment. By using organic cleaners such as, SoyClean you can make your summer and your grill more chemical free.
3. Staying Cool and Green: By now everyone has set their A/C thermostats as low as possible to beat the summer heat. But did you know that by turning up your thermostat only a few degrees, about 1 to 2 degrees, it cannot only reduce your carbon footprint but can reduce your electricity bill by at least 8%! Another tip would be to turn up your thermostat while you are not home for long periods of time.
4. Water Restrictions: It seems that South Florida has been yearning for more of our liquid sunshine every summer season. Having water restrictions during the summer months is something that seems to occur every year across the U.S. and you can do your part by decreasing your water usage by either washing dishes or clothing with a full load, reusing water for house plants and gardens, or by taking your car through a professional carwash rather than washing it yourself at home.
With these tips your summer should be filled with new adventures and memorable times with your family and friends. Who knew staying green could be so satisfying!
