The Author of the Making of Nova Southeastern University to Receive the Stuart B. McIver Historian’s Award

Julian M. Pleasants, Ph.D., author and Professor Emeritus of History at University of Florida, will be presented with the Stuart B. McIver Historian’s Award by the Broward County Historical Commission for his book The Making of Nova Southeastern University: A Tradition of Innovation, 1964-2014 on Thursday, May 22. This outstanding book provides a look at the historic journey of Nova Southeastern University. This award is presented to those who have been involved in writing or who support efforts regarding local history.
This presentation will be part of the Broward County Heritage Celebration, hosted by the Broward County Historical Commission at the historic West Side Grade School, 301 Harmon (S.W. 13th) Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33312, where the Historical Commission is located. The celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The theme for this year’s event is “New Age of Preservation: Embark, Inspire, Engage”, in honor of National Historic Preservation Month. The program will include a presentation of other preservation awards as well. Refreshments will be served, and musical selections will be provided by flautist Laura Sue, “The Silver Nightingale“. A patriotic vocal selection will be performed by Monique Davis. Jorge L. Hernandez, noted architect and historic preservationist, will be the keynote speaker. His message will focus on the importance of the younger communities in Broward County to plan for the preservation of their historic and cultural resources. There will also be special recognition of the historical societies in Broward County. The Historical Commission gallery will have on display an exhibit entitled Cartography of South Florida, featuring historic maps and artifacts from Broward County and South Florida’s past.
Since 1973, the Broward County Historical Commission has recognized individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to historic preservation, research, advocacy and education.
