Tampa Regional PT Students Participate in Jamaica Medical Outreach

PT groupTen Physical Therapy (PT) students and four faculty members from Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Tampa Regional Campus recently participated in the 19th Jamaica Medical Outreach. The PT students encountered numerous patients with muscular-skeletal issues, the aches and pains resulting from a lifetime of heavy physical labor.

The 14 from Tampa  were among another 136 volunteers, made up of professors and students across multiple disciplines from NSU’s main campus in Davie, according to Mary Blackinton, PT, Ed.D., GCS; associate program director of the NSU physical therapy program in Tampa. “Among the many lessons we learn is that everybody can do a good deed that touches somebody else,” she explained.

While there, NSU Tampa Physical Therapy faculty and students launched an inaugural program in collaboration with University of West Indies (UWI) Professor Sharmella Roopchand-Martin and her students.

Members of the Outreach, from the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Optometry and Physical and Occupational Therapy, saw approximately 3,000 otherwise underserved patients of all ages, from infant to geriatric, in churches, schoolhouses, community centers and prisons.
