Suicide Awareness Seminar facilitated by Internationally Known Expert, Sept. 20

NSU’s Miami campus and We Care of South Dade, Inc. are hosting a free suicide awareness seminar on Friday, Sept. 20. from 9 a.m. to noon at Phichol Williams Community Center, 951 SW 4th Street, Homestead.  The featured speaker is Scott Poland, Ed.D, internationally known expert from NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies.

Poland is the co-director of the suicide and violence prevention office at NSU and professor at the NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies.  He is an internationally recognized expert on school crisis and has authored four books on the subject and he is a founding member of the National Emergency Assistance Team for the National Association of School Psychologists who has assisted schools and communities after many tragedies such as school shootings, suicides and acts of terrorism.  Poland is dedicated to suicide prevention and has testified about the needs of children before the U.S. Congress on four occasions.

Suicide can be traced to unrecognized, untreated, or poorly treated mental illness. It can happen to people of any gender, race, ethnicity and economic status.  Awareness and knowledge of warning signs and helping someone access the appropriate resources are crucial in the attempt to prevent suicide and violence.

The free seminar is designed for professionals, teachers, college students, and community members interested in learning more about the topic.  Attendees will learn about NSU’s psychological services available to the community and receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the seminar.
