Students Volunteer in New Orleans on Alternative Spring Break

Fifteen undergraduate students from NSU spent their spring break volunteering in New Orleans building houses with Habitat for Humanity.

The students on the Alternative Spring Break trip, which ran March 8-13, worked each day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Habitat for Humanity houses being built in the Lower Ninth Ward. The work included shingling a roof, siding the house, putting in installation, and working the inside of the house frame. The students also met with the site coordinator and discussed the importance of Habitat for Humanity within New Orleans.

“Although it has been five years since Katrina hit, there is still so much damage,” said NSU student Coral Dowsland. “But the culture and spirit of New Orleans is not gone. The local people appreciate and welcome every bit of effort that is given and this amplifies the New Orleans magic.”
