Students to Share Their Experiences in Prestigious Medical Research Internships, Oct. 2

Students from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will discuss their 2014 summer internship experiences assisting a surgical transplant team in Graz, Austria, and conducting research at Harvard Medical School.
The presentation, open to students of all majors, will be held on Thursday, October 2, at noon in Parker Building room 338. It will include information on how interested students can learn more about, and apply to participate in, future research internships.
Biology majors Biana Modilevsky and Sabina Joseph spent six weeks at the Medical University of Graz in Austria, where they worked under the guidance of a surgical transplant team. Daily tasks included administering medication and IVs to patients, phlebotomy, and assisting surgeons with suturing. Modilevsky is a member of the Undergraduate Honors Program and a participant in the Dual Admission Program in osteopathic medicine.
Biology major Marcus Engel spent three months studying at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Engel worked in a laboratory where he studied the mechanism of HIV-1 entry into target cells. Engel is the first NSU student to participate in this summer internship.
The students participated in the Summer Biology Student Internship Program, which provides practical, hands-on experience to help prepare students for careers in the biological sciences.
