Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Donates over 400 Food Items to Pantry of Broward County
The Nova Southeastern University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee donated 290 pounds worth of food in a recent food drive for the Pantry of Broward County.
The Sharks held their food drive during the recent 2015 Fall Kickoff party, with SAAC asking all teams to bring any nonperishable food items they could spare. In all, the Sharks donated 402 items, which were later dropped off by SAAC president and women’s soccer player Samantha Gestido (Sr., Hialeah, Fla.) along with volleyball players Samantha Blasko (Fr., Ocala, Fla.) and Ashlyn Hill (So., Plano, Texas), who also serves as the Make-A-Wish co-chair.
“This food drive illustrated the impact our student-athletes can collectively make,” said SAAC Liaison Eugene Canal. “When we made the drop off, we were told that 150 pounds would be considered excellent for a one-day food drive. The Sharks nearly doubled that mark, which shows how much potential this group has in impacting South Florida.”
The Pantry of Broward County is a local organization that serves as a food bank for the county. The organization specifically caters to senior citizens and retirees who are taking care of young families. NSU SAAC is excited to continue working with the Pantry of Broward County and looks to form a community partnership for the future.
