Stem Cell Researcher Named Health Care Heroes Finalist
Peter Murray, Ph.D., associate professor of endodontics at NSU’s College of Dental Medicine, was recently named a finalist in the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Health Care Heroes Awards in the bio-medical category. The award recognizes individuals, institutions, professionals, students, or volunteer programs, who, through their individual or group actions, have made an extraordinary impact on the South Florida health care community.
Murray and his research colleagues from the College of Dental Medicine (CDM) are working to create new teeth, bone, and other body tissues, using tissue engineering technologies. The scientists have secured more than $2 million in research support from the National Institutes of Health, professional dental and medical organizations, and medical supply companies for their regenerative health care research. Murray’s tissue engineering technology, which is designed to be used by health care practitioners in their offices, is delivered using a “regeneration kit,” which has been patented by NSU. In the coming decades, the researchers expect health care practitioners to use their kit to deliver regenerative treatments to replace lost and diseased tissues.
