St. Thomas University President to speak at NSU Health Professions Division Commencement
The Rev. Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale, president of St. Thomas University, will be the keynote speaker at NSU’s Health Professions Division’s commencement on May 30. The ceremony, where 836 students will receive their degrees, will be held at 1 p.m. at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. Graduating students come from the colleges of dental medicine, optometry, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, medical sciences, and allied health and nursing.
As the president of St. Thomas University, Casale has been active in a range of community organizations which include: Palmetto General Hospital, Catholic Community Foundation, Archdiocese of Miami, Board of Governors for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Holocaust Documentation & Education Center, Inc., and Board member of the Orange Bowl Committee. Prior to joining St. Thomas, he was the vicar general, chancellor and moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, where he also served as a member of the board of trustees at Seton Hall University; governing board of Fair Oaks Hospital; and board of Trustees and executive committee at Bloomfield College.
He has proven to be a significant presence in Miami since his arrival, serving on the board of directors for both the Carrfour Corporation, an organization which provides housing for the homeless; and Fonkoze USA, which helps to enable economic development in Haiti. His global initiatives include his work on the Governor’s Haiti Advisory Group and Haiti-Tech, an organization he helped found that coordinates and maintains a vocational/technical school in Haiti and educates over 700 students annually.
