Special Olympics Honors its Top Broward County Award Winners for 2010

Special Olympics Broward County, based at NSU, recently hosted its annual awards ceremony recognizing all of the athletes, sponsors, volunteers and friends that have helped the organization continue its effort to provide FREE services to nearly 800 athletes.

This year’s honorees included:

  • The Don Taft Athlete Of The Year Award: Kerri Leonardo
  • Coach Of The Year Award: Debra Ducas
  • Family Of The Year Award: Kodish Family
  • The Pinion, Inc. Local Organization Of The Year Award: Victory Living Program
  • The Melvin Zarefsky Volunteer Of The Year Award: Barbara Killen
  • Youth Volunteer Of The Year Award: Team Taravella Seniors
  • Honorary Board Member Of The Year Award: Alan Lieberman
  • Media Organization Of The Year Award: Society Scene of Sun Sentinel
  • The Timothy Gillette Law Enforcement Torch Run Award: Cindy Heafy
  • Special Olympics Broward County Hall Of Fame Induction: Pinion, Inc.

NSU is home to the Special Olympics Broward County chapter, which is the only chapter in the nation to be housed at a university.

Through successful sports training and competition, Special Olympics athletes develop physically, socially, and psychologically. The positive experiences the athletes have in ongoing Special Olympics programs builds confidence and self-image, which carries into all aspects of their lives.
