Soul of a People WPA Exhibition at Alvin Sherman Library – Now Open
The NSU community is invited to experience the Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story exhibition at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center from March 28 through May 10.
Soul of a People tells the story of the Works Progress Administration’s (WPA) Federal Writers Project (FWP) during the Great Depression. The FWP was responsible for the American Guide Series of travel guides for every state and for interviews with former slaves and thousands of citizens all across the U.S. in the 1930s.
Many writers from the project later became famous, among them Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Studs Terkel and Eudora Welty. Soul of a People is an exhibit from the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book.
Soul of a People programming at the Alvin Sherman Library will include an exhibit, gallery tours, a film showing, musical performances and talks on the Great Depression. The exhibit will include displays of books, Depression glass and quilts from the 1930s. The event schedule includes:
- “Saturday Afternoon at the Matinee” – Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m.
Travel back in time and enjoy a newsreel, feature film and cartoon from the 1930s. Commentary provided. - Exhibit Tour – Monday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
Led by Nora Quinlan, Alvin Sherman Library’s director of reference. - “South Florida and the WPA Oral History Project” – Thursday, April 9 at 4 p.m.
A presentation by David Kilroy, Ph.D., from NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, and NSU students. - Exhibit Tour – Monday, April 13 at 2 p.m.
Led by Nora Quinlan, Alvin Sherman Library’s director of reference. - “The People’s Art and 1930’s Florida” – Thursday, April 16 at 4 p.m.
A lecture by Gary R. Mormino, Ph.D., professor of history from the University of South Florida. - “Zora Neale Hurston: The WPA and the Blues” – Tuesday, April 21 at 4 p.m.
A musical presentation by Christine Jackson, professor in NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. - “Zelda Fitzgerald: A Literary Dramatization” – Wednesday, April 22 at 2 p.m.
A portrayal by Debra Conner of Parkersburg, West Virginia. This program is in conjunction with the NEA initiative of the Broward County Big Read of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. - “Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story” – Thursday, May 7 at 4 p.m.
