SHSS Welcomes Visiting Faculty Member
Claire Michele Rice, Ph.D.
Honggang Yang, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) has announced the appointment of Claire Michele Rice, Ph.D., to the faculty at SHSS. Rice has been appointed as Visiting Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution and Sociology in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR).
Rice received her doctoral degree in Comparative Sociology and her master’s degree in Linguistics from Florida International University. She has been an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Florida Memorial University and was previously on the faculty at DCAR. Rice has served as a consultant in poverty alleviation, diversity training, and conflict management to businesses, civic organizations, and institutions of primary to higher education in the Caribbean and in the U.S., including for the Margaret McDonald Policy Management & Administration Center in Nassau, Bahamas. She was awarded their Outstanding Service Award in 2006.
Rice’s research and teaching interests include qualitative methodology, community organization, conflict resolution, poverty alleviation/economic empowerment, diversity, collaborative problem-solving and mentoring. She has authored, edited, co-authored several monographs, book chapters, articles, training manuals, and newsletters on diversity issues, conflict resolution, community organizing and inclusive community building. Rice has served on the Editorial Board of the Peace and Conflict Studies Journal and The FEF Journal of Interdisciplinary Research and has volunteered her services as newsletter editor to several non-profit, community-based organizations.
