SHSS Welcomes New Faculty Member, Kara Erolin, Ph.D.
Kara Erolin, Ph.D.
Honggang Yang, Ph.D., dean of NSU’s Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), has announced the appointment of Kara Erolin, Ph.D., to the faculty. Erolin has been appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Family Therapy (DFT).
Erolin received her doctoral degree in family social science with a specialization in marriage and family therapy and her master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, AAMFT Clinical Fellow and AAMFT approved supervisor candidate. She was visiting faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for three years and has held several adjunct positions using both online and classroom instructional formats. She also received training in the delivery of culturally competent mental health services as an AAMFT/SAMSHA fellow for two consecutive years.
Erolin is passionate about social justice issues for marginalized populations especially for individuals, families, and communities affected by violence and conflict. She has been trained on two evidence-based interventions: Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder, and Parent Management Training-Oregon Model (PMTO) for parent skills training. She is a certified trainer in NET, and over the past six years she has conducted multiple trainings on NET for clinicians working with torture survivors.
Erolin’s research and teaching interests include the adaptation/innovation of culturally and contextually appropriate clinical interventions for cross-cultural populations, the development of multicomponent methodologies and treatments for psychological trauma, the impact of trauma on child and adolescent outcomes, and the interface between trauma and substance abuse.
