SHSS to host Preventing Genocide: The Inaugural Lecture, Feb. 7
NSU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) has created its new Genocide Prevention Lecture Series. The first lecture is entitled, “Preventing Genocide: The Inaugural Lecture,” and will feature Samuel Totten, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus at the University of Arkansas, with Jason J. Campbell, Ph.D. faculty in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) will facilitating the event.
The lecture is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 pm in the Knight Auditorium of the Carl DeSantis Building. A reception will follow. Those interested should RSVP to Erica Guterman at 954-262-3003 as seating is limited. This event is generously supported by Marta and Jim Batmasian.
Totten is the co-founding editor of Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal, the co-editor of the Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies, the author, editor or co-editor of over 20 books and has written numerous articles and essays. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Rwanda in 2008 and in 2004, Totten was one of 24 investigators with the U.S. State Department’s Atrocities Documentation Project along the Chad/Sudan border collecting data regarding the genocide in Darfur. He recently conducted field work in Africa’s Nuba Mountains on the Darfur genocide.
Campbell’s teaching and research interests include genocide studies and prevention, the problem of evil, state endorsed mass extermination, international war and the theoretical understanding of exclusionary ideologies. Campbell is the executive director and founder of the Institute for Genocide Awareness and Applied Research (IGAAR).
