SHSS Student named Program Director at Amazon Conservation Team Suriname
Gwendolyn Emanuels-Smith, doctoral student in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR), has been named the Director at Amazon Conservation Team Suriname. The group is a non-governmental organization working in partnership with indigenous and maroon peoples in conserving biodiversity, health and culture in Suriname. The organization has been supporting the land rights dialog between indigenous groups and the Government of Suriname for the last seven years. Recently the organization secured $35,900 from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for tribal training support.
Last summer, SHSS students led by Elena Bastidas, Ph.D., faculty in DCAR, traveled to Suriname to explore the historical, social, ecological and cultural diversity of the country.
