SHSS Student Invited by the German Marshall Fund to Participate in Exchange

Larry Schooler, M.S., graduate of the master’s program in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), is one of three US city representatives invited by the German Marshall Fund to participate in a trans-Atlantic exchange on best practices in public engagement and dispute resolution. In October, the meeting was held in Berlin. However, in January 2013, the second meeting will be held in Washington, DC, and the third will be held in Leipzig during the spring of 2013.

In October, Schooler was part of a plenary session at the International Association for Public Participation’s conference held in Canada. His presentation was entitled, “Beyond the Town Hall: A New Era for Public Engagement.”

Schooler works with the City of Austin, TX as Community Engagement Consultant, and is the first person to hold the position. He is involved in collaboratively addressing community issues with the public and facilitating greater public participation in government. He was also a Public Policy Fellow at the Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution in the School of Law at the University of Texas in Austin. Currently, Schooler is pursuing his doctoral degree in DCAR.
