SHSS hosts Family Violence Workshop Series, Nov. 19

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) will offer a four part Workshop Series focusing on Family Violence. The series will be held in the Alvin Sherman Library, room 4009 on Thursday, November 17, from 6:30-8:30pm; Saturday, Nov. 19, from 11:00am-1:00pm; Thursday, December 1, from 6:30-8:30pm, and Saturday, December 3, from 11:00am-1:00pm.

The series is offered as part of Peace Place and VOICES Family Outreach, two of the programs offered by SHSS’ Community Resolution Services (CRS). CRS offers a variety of services to the local community including mediation, facilitation, conflict coaching, workshops, and training to organizations, families, and communities. Peace Place, a collaboration between SHSS and the Broward County Library System, provides presentations and workshops for the NSU and local communities held in Broward County libraries. VOICES provides services and workshops focused on helping to prevent violence within the family.

The moderator will be Judith McKay, J.D., Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies (DMS) and speakers will be SHSS graduate students and other invited presenters.

Teen violence, including dating violence and cyber-bullying
Thursday, Nov 17 – 6:30-8:30pm

Domestic Violence Across Cultures
Saturday, Nov 19 – 11:00am-1:00pm

Addressing the Cross-Cultural Transgenerational Transmission of Trauma in Families
Thursday Dec 1 – 6:30-8:30pm

Typology of Family Violence and Factors impacting family conflict including GLBT issues
Saturday, Dec 3 – 11:00am-1:00pm

The series is free and participants need not attend all the sessions. For certified mediators, sessions will help fulfill continuing mediation education units in Domestic Violence and launches CRS’ upcoming 2012 continuing mediator education series.
