SHSS Launches New Program: M.S. in National Security Affairs
National security affairs is one of the fastest growing professions with positions open in the public and private sectors, as well as the federal, state, and local governments.
Understanding the growing demand for this important profession, the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences will now offer a new 33-credit M.S. in National Security Affairs (NAS) program. The new program will be in SHSS’s Department of Multidisciplinary Studies. NSA is offered online and will begin in 2011.
The M.S. in National Security Affairs program is designed for professionals currently in the field of national security affairs who are seeking career advancement, those who aspire to enter the field, individuals in related professions, and those retired or about to retire from the military/government and are seeking consulting and other positions.
NAS will provide students with theoretical, research, and applied skills in the emerging academic field of national security affairs. Students will build a core understanding of critical issues informing the field of national security today, including the assessment analysis of intelligence collection and analysis of the threat of terrorism in the U.S. and beyond.
The five core classes are: Current & Historical Issues, Terrorists & Terrorism, National Intelligence Collection, Border Protection & Military Issues, and Research and Evaluation in National Security Affairs. Students will then select a concentration in one of these areas, as well as two additional electives from any of the concentrations:
– Cyber-terrorism and Security (in partnership with the Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences)
– Criminal Justice (in partnership with the Criminal Justice Institute)
– International Relations and Global Affairs (at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences)
– Homeland Security (at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences)
Faculty members teaching in the program include full-time and part-time NSU professors who are engaged in or work in the field.
Note: This program is pending review and approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
