SHSS Faculty and Students Travel and Study in Suriname

Elena Bastidas, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) and thirteen graduate students from SHSS traveled to Suriname last summer as part of an Advanced Practicum course and the SHSS Study Abroad Program. The course focused on conflict management and resolution in the context of international development.

While in Suriname the students, under the supervision of Bastidas, explored the historical, social, ecological and cultural diversity of the country. They had the opportunity to interact with government officials, university professors, natural resource management experts, and development practitioners. They also had the unique opportunity to interact with the Surinamese people, hearing the hopes and problems of commercial and small farmers, men and women who depend on agriculture for their livelihood.  The group presented a workshop on conflict resolution to government officials and others.

Bastidas specializes in economics, conservation and development, gender and development, development of appropriate technology for small farmers, livelihood systems, and quantitative methods.
