SHSS Faculty and Students Present at AAMFT in Charlotte
Tommie Boyd, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Family Therapy (DFT) in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), along with DFT doctoral students Jenna Wilson and Diana Giraldez, presented at the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy’s (AAMFT) Annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. The presentation was entitled, “So Your Client is Attracted to You, Now What?”
The presentation addressed the impact of a client’s attraction to their therapist and how it can impede progress and even dissolve a formerly helpful professional relationship. It provided literature and case examples of female therapists who have dealt with situations in which a client has become attracted to them. The presentation included how to deal with client attraction through conversations about ethical and boundaries issues, ways to prevent and resolve the attraction, client and therapist vulnerabilities, and supervision issues.
