SHSS Faculty Presents on Social Capital and Social Entrepreneurs at AIS Conference in San Diego

Judith McKay, J.D. Ph.D.

Judith McKay, J.D., Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies (DMS) in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), gave a presentation at the Association for Integrative Studies Annual Conference hosted by San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 7-10. This year’s conference theme was: “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Integrating Ethics and Sustainability.”

McKay’s presentation was entitled: “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Community Development and Sustainability through Social Capital and Social Entrepreneurs.” The session provided a review of the impact of changing demographic trends in South Florida, including the challenges of new cultures, emerging new local identities, and the need for interdisciplinary approaches to address limited resources, generate social capital, and explore opportunities for social entrepreneurs.

McKay is also the director of Community Resolution Services (CRS) at SHSS. CRS offers trainings and workshops, as well as mediation, facilitation, conflict coaching, and community building services to individuals, families, groups, and organizations to manage conflicts and enhance capacity on the NSU campus and in the community.
